On-Premises

On-premises refers to IT systems operated on an organisation's own hardware in its own or leased facilities — procurement, maintenance, capacity planning and lifecycle all remain with the operator. The term is defined in contrast to cloud operation, where infrastructure is consumed as a service. Common reasons for on-premises are latency requirements in manufacturing and engineering, regulatory rules on where data may reside, ongoing hardware depreciation cycles and applications with no cloud equivalent. In practice the dominant pattern today is not either/or but hybrid: a local foundation combined with cloud services.

On-Premises in practice

On-premises is not legacy technology but a deliberate operating decision for workloads where data sovereignty, latency or availability must be solved locally. The difference from cloud lies less in the technology than in the responsibility: capacity has to be sized up front, resilience comes from redundancy in your own data centre, and the hardware lifecycle sets the modernisation rhythm.

Vendor support is a hard pacemaker — Windows Server 2016 leaves extended support on 12 January 2027, after which security updates are only available through paid Extended Security Updates, for at most three further years. Modern on-premises environments therefore look different from a decade ago: hyperconverged clusters instead of separate SAN silos, NVMe instead of spinning disks, 10G or 25G networks instead of 1G, segmentation instead of flat networks, and immutable backup targets instead of tape rotation.

Typical weaknesses are missing hardware-level redundancy, backups reachable from the production network and therefore themselves a target, and an Active Directory that has merely been carried forward for years.
