Veeam Backup & Replication

Backup and replication software for virtual, physical and cloud workloads — with immutable storage as protection against ransomware.

Overview

Veeam Backup & Replication in practice

Veeam Backup & Replication protects virtual, physical and cloud workloads and replicates them to a second site; the current generation is version 13, shipping as release 13.1 since July 2026. The security-critical piece is the hardened repository: a hardened Linux server sets the immutable attribute on every backup file — XFS with reflink is recommended, because it additionally enables Fast Clone.

Within the configured immutability period — a minimum of seven days, a maximum of 9,999 — a file cannot be deleted, altered or renamed, not even with root or administrator rights. Block generation extends the effective lock by up to ten further days. The target picture is Veeam's 3-2-1-1-0 rule: three copies, two media types, one off site, one immutable or offline, and zero errors in the recovery test.

Alendris implemented Veeam Backup & Replication with immutable on-premises storage inside a zero-trust infrastructure — precisely the difference between having a backup and having a restore that is guaranteed to work.
