Microsoft Purview in practice
Microsoft Purview is the governance and compliance layer over Microsoft 365 and Azure data. Its modules interlock: sensitivity labels mark and encrypt documents, Data Loss Prevention stops data leaving through mail, Teams and SharePoint, Insider Risk Management flags unusual behaviour, eDiscovery supports legal proceedings, and Records Management enforces retention periods technically. The interplay with Copilot matters most: for encrypted content Copilot checks the VIEW and EXTRACT usage rights — without EXTRACT the document is not summarised and can only be referenced by a link.
That turns labels into a real control over AI access rather than a decorative tag. The pitfall: a label taxonomy with too many branches overwhelms users and gets circumvented. Alendris therefore introduces Purview with few, clearly distinguishable levels and aligns them with the evidence obligations arising from GDPR, ISO 27001 and NIS2.
