Overview

Microsoft Azure in practice

Microsoft Azure is the strategic cloud platform for mid-market and enterprise organisations across the DACH region. The difference from AWS lies less in the technology than in the integration: identities come from Entra ID, Microsoft 365 hangs off the same directory, and licences run through the same agreement. Data residency is governed by the EU Data Boundary, which Microsoft delivered in three waves — customer data from January 2023, pseudonymised personal data from January 2024, and since February 2025 professional services data as well.

Regionally, Germany West Central, Switzerland North and the Austria East region opened in Vienna in 2025 with three availability zones are available. The practical pitfall is rarely the technology but cost control: without budgets, tags and firm naming conventions an environment becomes unmanageable within months. Alendris therefore builds Azure environments as a landing zone aligned with the Cloud Adoption Framework — hub-spoke networking, central logging and cost governance from day one, described in Bicep or Terraform.
