Microsoft 365 Copilot in practice
Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, drawing through Microsoft Graph on exactly the content each user is already allowed to see. That is precisely where the risk sits: Copilot also surfaces whatever has quietly been over-shared for years. As an emergency brake Microsoft offers Restricted SharePoint Search, which limits search and Copilot to at most 100 selected SharePoint sites — it is explicitly a stopgap, can no longer be newly enabled after 31 July 2026, and is being replaced by Restricted Content Discovery.
The real work therefore remains cleaning up permissions before launch. Copilot is a per-user add-on licence on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 licence. Alendris supported the rollout at a financial services firm — with sensitivity labels and Purview in place before the start, and over 70 percent active usage after eight weeks.
